For twenty years she worked with the country's most powerful people. A successful attorney, she was smart and ambitious, and she believed her work made a difference. So when her father asked her to come home and be the receptionist at his tiny rural doctor's office while her mother recovered from a heart attack, Carolyn reluctantly agreed, thinking she could handle it--for a day or two. Her job now included following hazmat regulations for cleaning up bodily fluids; maintaining composure when confronted with a splinter the size of a steak knife; distinguishing between a "pain," a "strain," and a "sprain" on indecipherable Medicaid forms; and tending to the loquacious Miss Hiawatha, whose daily doctor visits were never billed. Slowly her fast-track Washington world began to pale in comparison with her new life. And her father proved more heroic and devoted than any politician she'd ever met. He made a difference every day, treating each patient, no matter how crazy or ornery or obnoxious, with dignity. And so, now, did Carolyn. Told with tremendous heart, this is the story of how, sometimes, you can--and should--go home again.

"This carefully researched anthology of the timeless wisdom found in Celtic writings and traditions will bring new life to forgotten beliefs and foster a fresh understanding of modern Christianity. It is a special feature of Celtic Christianity that some of the basic principles, and many of the practices of the old nature religion, were assimilated and allowed to continue unabated, finding expression in a unique form of Christianity that has since sadly disappeared. The texts presented here are taken from a wide spectrum of sources—from pre-Christian material transmitted by oral folk traditions and recorded later, through the wisdom and the philosophies of the latter period."--Publisher description. "This positive, straightforward book offers kids with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) their own comprehensive resource for both understanding their condition and finding tools to cope with the challenges they face every day. Some children with ASDs are gifted; others struggle academically. Some are more introverted, while others try to be social. Some get "stuck" on things, have limited interests, or experience repeated motor movements like flapping or pacing ("stims"). The Survival Guide for Kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders covers all of these areas, with an emphasis on helping children gain new self-understanding and self-acceptance. Meant to be read with a parent, the book addresses questions ("What's an ASD?" "Why me?") and provides strategies for communicating, making and keeping friends, and succeeding in school. Body and brain basics highlight symptom management, exercise, diet, hygiene, relaxation, sleep, and toileting. Emphasis is placed on helping kids handle intense emotions and behaviors and get support from family and their team of helpers when needed. The book includes stories from real kids, fact boxes, helpful checklists, resources, and a glossary. Sections for parents offer more detailed information"--

In God's School is foundational Christian instruction. It follows the outline of John Calvin's Geneva Catechism along with the Heidelberg Catechism. According to the ancient practice of the church, In God's School instructs in doctrine, expounding the Apostles' Creed. It enriches common evangelical treatments of these subjects by including fine sections on the church and the ministry of Word and sacraments as means of grace. It lays out basic Christian ethics by expounding the Ten Commandments. It teaches Christian worship by explaining the Lord's Prayer. This book may be used over the course of a school year. Students read a chapter each week. It also familiarizes students with the fine catechetical materials of the Protestant Reformation. Each chapter is divided into daily readings that include Scripture, so the student receives doctrinal teaching along with daily Bible study. Perhaps the greatest strength of In God's School is the presentation of the Commandments and Prayer. John Calvin's stress on the grace of God shines through ethical exhortation. Maturity in Christ comes from a growing knowledge of God through the gospel of his Son, a clearer understanding of the life he calls us to walk before him, and the Spirit's love and strength. With spiritual wisdom and rigor, Pierre Marcel leads us in knowing God. The year is 1967; Vietnam is in flames and half a world away few realize that a firefight on a jungle road in Latin America is the beginning of a new and secret war. In the Nancahuazu Valley of Bolivia international revolutionary Che Guevara leads a band of guerillas determined to liberate a continent. Paul Hoyle, a CIA paramilitary officer, joins a team of operatives sent to crush the Bolivian insurgency. When a recovered backpack reveals that Che Guevara is in command of the rebels, the stage is set for a duel between world ideologies. This powerful, tragic story transports the reader into the heart of the Bolivian jungle and into a world of noble truth and glorious aspirations. Pfarrer writes of love and defeat, loyalty and betrayal, and the tragic death of an ideal. At the center of the struggle are two complex women who may hold the keys to each man's destiny: Tania, Che's crucial undercover operative and occasional lover who, unbeknownst to him, is a "deep placement" of the KGB; and Maria Agular, mistress of the Bolivian Minister of Information, whom Hoyle dares to trust with both information and his emotions. |
